Skopelos has become known as the ‘Mamma Mia’ island since the 2007 movie was filmed there. It is a beautiful island of pine forests, olive groves and Mamma Mia film locations!
Skopelos
To get to Skopelos from Athens we took a 7am bus from Athens to Agios Konstantinos (arriving 9.20am) then a 10.30am ferry to Skopelos. The ferry goes via Skiathos but we decide to visit Skopelos first.
Our host Helen meets us at the ferry and whisks us up the hill to our accommodation – Tsoukalaria Studios – a 2-bedroom apartment with the most fabulous view!
Helen organises a hire car for us, and we spend a couple of days exploring the island:
- Stafylos Beach – close to Skopelos town, this is a lovely pebbly beach with a good taverna on the road above the beach (before you go down the stairs). Not much parking.
- Amarantos – we didn’t attempt to drive on what looked like a steep, rocky road on the left just before Agnontas, however Amarantos is a popular spot of rocky coves, and the little pine trees on a rocky outcrop are one of the most photographed scenes on the island – made famous by the Mamma Mia movie.
- Agnontas – picturesque little fishing harbour where we enjoy a delicious lunch at Korali restaurant by the water. Lots of restaurants line the water and a pretty beach.
- Limnonari Beach – lovely, enjoyed a swim with the pretty Apanemo Beach Club bar/restaurant behind.
- Panormos – also a nice pebbly beach – lots of sunbeds
- Milia Beach – another nice beach
- Kastani Beach – well-known for many Mamma Mia scenes filmed here – now has a beach bar with loud music!
- Glossa and Loutraki – Glossa is located on a hill high above the small harbour of Loutraki, the second port on Skopelos.
- Agios Ioannis – chapel made famous as the Mamma Mia wedding scene filmed here – a pretty drive to get there.
- Glysteri Beach – we loved this small beach with beach bar and loved the drive through the olive groves to reach it.
- Skopelos town – Skopelos town is very picturesque and is located on the slopes of a large bay. It has a vibrant waterfront area of restaurants and boutiques, and small leafy squares and charming narrow pedestrian streets with traditional white-washed buildings and colourful shutters. Our favourite restaurant was Molos – a traditional Greek taverna on the waterfront. Don’t miss Kochylis Café, Bakery and Patisserie – delicious baked goods and snacks – right opposite where the ferry arrives/leaves; it is also a good place to buy gifts such as olive oil soaps and lotions. We loved wandering the streets of Skopelos town and discovered some smart boutiques and stunning bougainvillea filled streets.
We were sad to leave Skopelos – it was one our favourite Greek islands.
