Bled Apartments, Lake Bled, Slovenia
Bled Apartments provide clean, comfortable and spacious accommodation about 500m from the edge of Lake Bled.
We had Room 13, a one-bedroom apartment with separate kitchen and bathroom, located one level down from Reception. The room appeared to be newly renovated.
Although we were below street level, there was plenty of light from the large windows looking onto a small terrace at the back of the building.
Emonec Hotel, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Hotel Emonec
The Emonec Hotel has a wonderful location – just moments from Preseren Square and the Triple Bridge – the heart of beautiful Ljubljana.
Entry to the hotel is via an archway off Wolfova Street into a large courtyard with Reception on your right.
We stayed in Room 403, a 4-star room on the first floor (no lift) in the new part of the hotel. Three-star rooms are in the same building as Reception.
Our room was spacious, clean and bright – a Scandinavian look – with a window opening onto the courtyard below.
City Lodge Hotel OR Tambo International Airport – Johannesburg
The City Lodge Hotel OR Tambo International Airport – Johannesburg is very convenient, comfortable and affordable accommodation at OR Tambo Airport.
On arrival at Johannesburg we cleared Immigration and Customs, walked into the Arrivals area and caught a lift to the 2nd floor of the terminal to make our way to Hotel City Lodge.
The hotel is a little hard to find – it’s located on top of a car park and you will see it through the large windows on your right as you walk and follow the signs to Parking Level 2 and the hotel. We wheeled our trolleys with luggage, reached the hotel lift and made our way up to Reception. No transfers, no taxis, no waiting. After a 12.5-hour flight from Sydney, it’s just a few minutes walk off the plane, across to the hotel, without leaving the terminal building.
Meike’s Guesthouse, Swakopmund, Namibia
Meike’s Guesthouse is a delightful place to stay in Swakopmund.
We stayed at Meike’s in May 2014 and after several night’s camping in Namibia’s interior, Meike’s was a welcome break. And we could not have had a warmer welcome. The owners (Meike and Klaus) and staff are friendly and hospitable. It was wonderful to have local advice on what to see, where to eat, etc.
We booked into Room 2 which was very spacious. In fact as well as the bedroom and bathroom, we had a sitting room with sofa, bar fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, dressing table and hairdryer. Our bedroom was a large room and included a desk and TV. The bathroom was also very big with a walk-in shower.
Room 2 is very private and has its own little verandah with small outdoor table and chairs.
Meike’s is very well maintained. From the spotlessly clean rooms to the very pretty courtyard, it is obvious that there is a lot of care and attention to detail.
Security was also excellent. We were able to park our vehicle off the street in a secure courtyard with a security guard on duty each night so did not have to worry about our camping gear, etc.
Meike’s is very well located within walking distance to the main shopping area of Swakopmund.
With a delicious continental breakfast included in the room rate Meike’s is excellent value for money.
Meike’s Guesthouse is located at 23 Windhoeker Street, Swakopmund.

Ramada Jumeirah Hotel, Dubai
We travelled to Dubai in June 2013 – as a stopover between London and Sydney.
A couple of days before leaving London, we were able to book a room at The Ramada Jumeirah Hotel at a very good price by Dubai standards. We found the new four star Ramada Jumeirah (built 2011) to be excellent value for money.
Our Classic Room was very spacious and the bathroom was one of the largest we have found in any hotel. Room facilities were excellent – we particularly liked the long desk – plenty of room for our computers. Unfortunately WIFI was not free except for the first hour.
There was a small rooftop pool plus a Health Club and Spa for guests. (more…)
EasyHotel, South Kensington, London
If you are looking for cheap accommodation in a good location of London, then easyHotel South Kensington could be for you.
At 50 pounds a night for two people, it’s certainly cheap by London standards. However, it is the smallest hotel room we have ever stayed in!
The room consists of a double bed (with or without a window), two hooks on the wall, two power points, a small TV screen (extra charge to use) and a tiny bathroom with shower and toilet. There is no place in the room to store luggage as floor space is very tiny (ask reception about luggage storage).
This hotel certainly won’t suit everyone. Don’t stay here if you like to hang out and relax in your room. It is a place to sleep and two can be a crowd!
We had a car and while parking is limited, we were fortunate to be staying over a weekend when street parking was free on both Saturday and Sunday. During the week street parking is only free overnight. Parking is also available at Sainsbury’s nearby – but only for a limited time and not overnight.
Located at 14 Lexham Gardens, Kensington, easyHotel Kensington is in a great location:
- 10 minute walk to Gloucester Rd Tube Station
- 10 minute walk to Earls Court Tube Station
- 10 minute walk to High Street Kensington
- 10-15 minute walk to Natural History Museum
- 20 minute walk to V&A Museum
- 30 minute walk to Harrods
- 20 minute walk to Royal Albert Hall
