If you are in Moab to visit Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park, don’t miss the small but dramatic Dead Horse Point State Park.
We had seen photos of the fantastic views from Dead Horse Point and were keen to see it first hand so after visiting Canyonlands NP, we took the short drive (about 6.5 miles from Canyonlands Visitor Centre) to the Park.
We stopped at the entrance to the Park where a Ranger checked our pass, then onto the Visitor Centre (gift shop, display of geology upstairs, art exhibition of local artist and video downstairs). Be sure to go out on the balcony for the views and to walk the short nature trail. It was too hot to walk the longer trails.
There are a three walking trails starting at the Visitor Centre:
- Short Nature Trail taking in views near Visitor Centre – 0.25 miles
- East Rim Trail to Dead Horse Point – 1.5 miles
- West Rim Trail to Dead Horse Point – 2.5 miles
Outside the Visitor Centre there is a small hut – the Pony Expresso Coffee Shop- selling hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, wraps, muffins, etc – the only place for miles to buy food and drinks.
We took the short drive from the Visitor Centre to Dead Horse Point – the view at the Point is spectacular! There is a covered area at the Point with picnic tables – it is a good place to escape the hot sun.
The final scene in the movie Thelma & Louise was filmed on a cliff below the viewpoint.
