The small town of Hvolsvollur was our first overnight stop on our tour around Iceland, following the Ring Road. On our arrival at Hotel Hvolsvollur we had a very friendly welcome from the charming Hotel Manager.
It was a wild and windy day and we were so glad to arrive at the hotel – which was warm and cosy inside. Don’t be put off by the exterior of the hotel – it was a very nice place to stay.
Room 322
We were in Room 322 on the first floor (stairs, no lift). It was a very warm and cosy room with Hollywood Twins (long, narrow twin beds pushed together) with bedside table and lamp either side. There was a good-sized desk with flat screen TV above and a wardrobe beside it. A kettle, cups, tea and coffee were provided.
The bathroom was quite small but very clean with shower, toilet and pedestal basin.
From the hallway to our room, we could see downstairs that there were two hot tubs available for guests – they had a roof covering them to protect people from the weather.
Iceland is a very photogenic country and near Reception, beautiful photographs lined the walls and were available to purchase in postcard size.
Parking
Parking is at the front of the hotel off the street – a quiet street off the main road.
Where to Eat
Breakfast was included in our rate and was provided downstairs in the restaurant. It was a very good breakfast – mostly a Continental breakfast (cereals, cheeses, cold meats, bread, fresh fruit, fruit juice, milk, yogurt, tea, coffee) plus baked beans and sausage.
In the summer season, the hotel restaurant provides guests with dinner however at the time of our visit (19 October 2016), dinner was only available if pre-ordered. The Hotel Manager recommended a place for dinner – the Eldsto Art Café – it was just down the road (also a Guesthouse). We had delicious home-made food (vegetable pie and salad) and found the staff to be very friendly. We can highly recommend this café.
We found wine to be very expensive in Iceland but the local beer (Gull) is better value for money.
Hotel Hvolsvollur – Highly Recommended
We had an excellent stay at Hotel Hvolsvollur. We found the staff on reception and in the dining room particularly friendly and efficient and got the impression that it was a very well run hotel. We had an excellent stay and can highly recommend Hvolsvollur Hotel.
